I recently finished reading a wonderful book by Mark Sundeen titled, “The Unsettlers: In Search of the Good Life in Today’s America.” I expected to find a book romanticizing tiny houses or van life. Contrarily, it was really a book about responsible living and activism through sustainable consumption and local food production. I was particularly surprised to find a section on farming in Detroit. And if they can farm in Detroit, what’s to stop us from growing our own food in Las Vegas?
To get started, we did some research about square foot gardening in a raised garden bed. To create our raised garden bed, we purchased some cedar pickets and some wood screws from Lowe’s. Zephyr helped with the cutting, drilling, and assembly of the box.
After building the box, Jenny and I filled it with “Red Star Forest-Gro” compost. Multiple sales clerks assured us that we could plant straight into the compost. After researching a bit, I’m not sure that’s correct, but we decided to go with their advice. After dumping the soil, we created 1’x1′ borders with some hemp twine. We then planted a variety of foods!
